Summer has taught students ranging from early college to medical residents and graduate students. Her courses were in mathematics, programming, data science, and cognitive neuroscience. She has over 30 peer-reviewed publications/proceedings in topics of machine learning, healthcare-AI, and analytic methods in neuroscience data.
Summer holds a PhD in Complex Systems and Brain Sciences (2010) from Florida Atlantic University. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine analyzing neuroimaging and healthcare data. She is the recipient of multiple National Institutes of Health (NIH) competitive training grants.
Summer is a passionate advocate and mentor for Women in Data Science at the local and national levels. She engages with local k-12 and college students to introduce them to the field of data science through invited talks, panels and hackathons. She is a beekeeper and also enjoys snorkeling and quilting.
